Songwriter Kristen Ford has released her new album Pinto, a 12-track collection addressing social and political themes through rock arrangements. The album is available now through Ani DiFranco’s Righteous Babe Records.
Ford worked with DiFranco on four songs for the project, with DiFranco serving as co-producer alongside Ford and Zac Brown Band member John Driskell Hopkins. The collaboration began after DiFranco attended one of Ford’s shows in 2022. Grammy-winning engineer Randy Merrill, known for his work with Taylor Swift and Chappell Roan, handled mastering duties.
The album tackles topics including LGBTQ+ rights, identity, and social justice. On the track “Wild Heart,” Ford sings: “You can’t control me, my pride or my joy, I don’t owe you a damn thing, if I’m a girl or a boy.” Another song, “White Man’s Dream,” includes the lyrics: “Raise your glass to the mighty Mississippi, and God bless a Southern man, how quickly you forget my great great great grandmother, she died pickin...

Michele Bettencourt is a singer/songwriter who found her own voice in 2018. She grew up as an only child in a lower middle-class household in northern California. Michele’s love of music was fostered by her mother who kept their home filled with sounds of Janis Joplin, Neil Young, Crosby Stills and Nash, Carol King and others whose music echoed with resonant the defiance against the Vietnam War and racial atrocities that shook America in the 1960’s and early 1970’s. Earlier in her music journey Michele joined forces with Hendrik Helmer, an accomplished guitarist in New York City and her dreams of becoming a writer re-emerged. With the help of exceptional musicians that included Mike Visceglia and Tommy Mandel, they recorded New Normal, an album that, while never marketed or distributed, is as timely now as it was then. Her lyrics and their melodies speak honestly about the cruelty of politics and the shame of failure and even the grace of redemption. Her upcoming album, Vampire Time, f...

“Involuntary twee” songwriter Julia Jade has returned with an introspective and empowering single, “missin’ out,” an uplifting and honest reflection on how fear can push us forward instead of holding us back. Known for her catchy indie pop melodies and charming lyricism, she fuses poignant honesty with theatrical sensibilities to take a genre-spanning approach to self-reflection and storytelling. Both uplifting and sentimental, “missin’ out” is now available to stream and download on all platforms.
Julia Jade initially wrote “missin’ out” at the age of 19 while feeling both awe-inspired and overwhelmed, breaking into the music scene, and shaped the tune around how self-doubt can be a push towards reaching greater heights. “This song encapsulates that time and feeling, and serves as a reminder that courage isn’t the absence of fear, but the ability to push through it,” she explains. Weaving together sincere, conversational lyricism and layered guitar and bass instrumentals, “missin’ o...

Psychedelic rock duo SORRYNOTSORRY return with “Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs,” a dark, hypnotic track that delves into the addictive nature of love and the disorienting highs and lows of emotional unraveling. The single, out now on all major streaming platforms, builds anticipation for their album The Other Side, arriving later this year.
Equal parts sassy and surreal, the song channels an erratic stream of consciousness in real time, wrapped in bass-heavy synths, whispery ASMR-style vocals, and a minimalist, trip-hop arrangement a la Portishead and Massive Attack. “Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs” was written and produced by SORRYNOTSORRY and mixed by AndrĂ©s Cottin, with mastering by Zach Kornhauser (Portugal. The Man, Sia, Kelly Clarkson). “At the peak of a post-pandemic, frenzied New York summer, I was burned out and questioning every decision I had made,” says vocalist Sam Dagnino. “I particularly wondered why I was behaving the way I did—and that led to the lyrics of ‘Sex, Drugs, and...
